"To Draw Out the Effort of His Mind": Educating a Child with Mental Retardation in Early-Nineteenth-Century America.

Details the educational experiences of one child with mental retardation, Thomas Cameron (1806-1870) and his family, based on the Cameron family's extensive correspondence. Analysis suggests that teachers adapted their methods to the boy's needs and that the Southern planter class could provide an encouraging environment for a child with a disability. (Author/DB)
