Rapid Conversion of Traditional Introductory Physics Sequences to an Activity-Based Format
Yoder, Garett; Cook, Jerry
Journal of STEM Education: Innovations and Research, v15 n2 p16-23 Jul-Sep 2014
The Department of Physics at EKU [Eastern Kentucky University] with support from the National Science Foundations Course Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement Program has successfully converted our entire introductory physics sequence, both algebra-based and calculus-based courses, to an activity-based format where laboratory activities, problem-solving sessions and lectures are seamlessly integrated in a single classroom. We report here, the structure, staffing and materials generated for the courses and the outcomes we have observed as a result of this conversion. Our experience in making this transition can serve as a model or blueprint for other colleges and universities interested in making similar changes.
