Peer reviewedPeterson, Rita W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Studied the effect of the presence of an adult on the responses of a racially mixed group of elementary school children to curiosity-arousing objects. Results showed that the children exhibited more curiosity when they were left alone. A significant interaction was also found for age x sex x race. (MLH)

Peer reviewedBilleh, Victor Y.; Hasan, Omar E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
A sample of 186 Jordanese high school science teachers participated in a summer training course in chemistry, physical science, physics, or biology. Analysis of pretest-posttest means showed significant increases in understanding the nature of science for participants in the chemistry, physical science, and physics groups. (MLH)

Peer reviewedShymansky, James A.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Describes a study using two types of macroanalytic analyses of observed teacher behaviors in the classroom. The findings of the study showed one of the macroanalytic techniques to be more effective as it identified broader behavior patterns occurring over longer periods of time. (MLH)
Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, Classroom Observation Techniques, Data Analysis, Educational Research
Peer reviewedTaylor, L. Eldon; Armstrong, Terry R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Describes a study in which the Predicted Role Measure (PRM) was found to be a predictive instrument for separating preservice teachers into activity-centered and textbook-centered elementary science teachers. Using Cattell's 16-Personality Factor Questionnaire, a significant difference was also found between the personality profiles of the two…

Peer reviewedOgden, William R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Statements of the objectives of secondary school chemistry teaching appearing in six science education journals during 1918-1972 are divided into six chronological periods and classified as knowledge, process, attitude and interest, or cultural awareness. Includes tables giving percentage rankings of the four main categories and eighteen…

Peer reviewedHasan, Omar E.; Billeh, Victor Y. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
After attending a four-week summer training course in science teaching, a sample of 129 Jordanese secondary school science teachers showed no over-all significant change in their attitude toward science. Professional inservice training was found to be positively related to the teachers' change in attitude, while their level of education had a…

Peer reviewedHasan, Omar E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
After testing a sample of 340 Jordanese eleventh-grade science students, several significant relationships were found between the students' interest in science and variables such as sex, career desired by parents, career desired by student, perception of scientific abilities, participation in extra-curricular activities, and motivation of teacher.…

Peer reviewedTamir, P.; Jungwirth, E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
A battery of tests was administered to three groups of high school students who studied the Israel Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) Adaptation Program for several years. Compared with non-BSCS students, the progress of the BSCS students in biological knowledge, inquiry skills, and understanding of science demonstrates the feasibility of…

Peer reviewedSchafer, Larry E.; Byers, Joe L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Kindergarten children who had been given cues during instructional sessions on serial ordering performed significantly better on serial ordering posttests than did the control group (no instructional sessions). Author concludes that the acquisition of serial ordering capabilities depends in part on learning and not solely on the development of…

Peer reviewedAllen, Ralph – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Studied whether or not viewing different versions of a silent, single concept film would affect the responses of elementary school children to tests related to the film. No significant correlations were found between pretest and posttest scores and 19 independent variables related to the children. (MLH)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Educational Research, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science
Peer reviewedSomers, Ronald L.; Lagdamen, Juan M., Jr. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Studied the intellectual differences between third and fourth grade Filipino children who had studied Science--A Process Approach (SAPA) and others who had studied a traditional curriculum. The SAPA children performed significantly better than the control group on a test of observing, comparing, and classifying simple geometric objects. (MLH)

Peer reviewedJungwirth, E.; Dreyfus, A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Presents a test designed to assess the "Understanding of the Nature of Scientific Enquiry" (UNSE) of Israeli students who studied the BSCS curriculum. Test results showed a 60 percent mastery level in knowledge of experimental methodology, indicating that the students had not mastered the type of tasks in the test. (MLH)

Peer reviewedRobertson, W. W.; Richardson, E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Studies of the hierarchical attainment of conservation of physics concepts revealed significant differences with respect to age, sex, and grade level in a random sample of seventh and eighth grade students. Conservation of a quantity did not necessarily depend on the prior conservation of its constituent fundamental quantities. (MLH)
