The Effects of Problem Format, Number of Independent Variables, and Their Interaction on Student Performance on a Control of Variables Reasoning Problem.
Staver, John R.
Journal of Research in Science Teaching, v23 n6 p533-42 Sep 1986

Results indicate that adding independent variables to a control of variables reasoning problem leads to an overload of working memory which affects performance. (ML)
