Huang, Shwu-yong L.; Fraser, Barry J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2009
Because the school environment has been shown to play an important role in teacher and student performance, we undertook research into the assessment of school environment, differences between female and male science teachers' perceptions of their school environments, and associations between these school environment perceptions and teachers'…

Peer reviewedScantlebury, Kathryn; Boone, William; Kahle, Jane Butler; Fraser, Barry J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2001
Describes the design, development, validation, and use of an instrument that measures student attitudes and several environmental dimensions (i.e., standards-based teaching, home support, and peer support). Indicates that the classroom environment (standards-based teaching practices) was the strongest independent predictor of both achievement and…

Peer reviewedFraser, Barry J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
Explores the relationship between a set of science-related attitudinal outcomes and student perceptions of the classroom learning environment. The attitudinal outcomes investigated were student attitude to four sources of information: experiments, experts, books, and teachers. (Author/GA)

Peer reviewedFraser, Barry J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1980
Described is the development of a test battery measuring nine enquiry skills in three general areas: using reference materials, interpreting and processing information, critical thinking in science. Validation data are reported from the administration to a large sample of junior high science students. (CS)

Peer reviewedFraser, Barry J.; Fisher, Darrell L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
To facilitate science teachers' use of classroom climate assessments, economical short forms of the Classroom Environment Scale, Individualized Classroom Environment Questionnaire, and My Class Inventory were developed. Each instrument contains only 25 items and is amenable to easy hand scoring. Developmental procedures, reliability, validity, and…

Peer reviewedFisher, Darrell L.; Fraser, Barry J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1983
Examined junior high school students' (N=2175) perceptions of actual and preferred classroom environment and teachers' (N=56) perceptions of the actual environment. Results indicated that students preferred a more favorable environment that was perceived as being actually present, and that teachers perceived their classroom environment more…

Peer reviewedFraser, Barry J.; Butts, William L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Relationships between levels of classroom individualization (personalization, participation, independence, investigation, and differentiation) and seven science-related attitudes of junior high school students (N=712) were examined. The study also provided support for the reliability and validity of the two instruments used and for their general…

Peer reviewedFraser, Barry J.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1995
Field tests of the Science Laboratory Environment Inventory (SLEI) with (n=5,447) high school and college students in six countries furnished evidence that science laboratory classes are dominated by closed-ended activities and that females held generally more favorable perceptions than males. Describes the development and validation of SLEI.…

Peer reviewedYoung, Deidra; Fraser, Barry J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1994
Uses design effect and hierarchical linear modeling to explore whether there were significant gender differences in science achievements in Australian schools (grades 5-12). Results indicate that school level differences were more significant in explaining student differences (9-19%) when compared with gender (3%). (ZWH)
