Gromko, Joyce Eastlund; Hansen, Dee; Tortora, Anne Halloran; Higgins, Daniel; Boccia, Eric – Journal of Research in Music Education, 2009
The purpose of this study was to determine whether children's recall of tones, numbers, and words was supported by a common temporal sequencing mechanism; whether children's patterns of memory for tones, numbers, and nonsense words were the same despite differences in symbol systems; and whether children's recall of tones, numbers, and nonsense…

Hayward, Carol M.; Gromko, Joyce Eastlund – Journal of Research in Music Education, 2009
The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of music sight-reading ability. The authors hypothesized that speed and accuracy of music sight-reading would be predicted by a combination of aural pattern discrimination, spatial-temporal reasoning, and technical proficiency. Participants (N = 70) were wind players in concert bands at a…

Gromko, Joyce Eastlund; Poorman, Allison Smith – Journal of Research in Music Education, 1998
Studies the relationships among children's aural perception of tonal pattern and children's symbol use in drawing and selection tasks based on tonal information. Shows that ability to use musical symbols in reading and writing tasks is related to aural perception of musical sound, and that these abilities follow a developmental progression. (DSK)

Gromko, Joyce Eastlund; Poorman, Allison Smith – Journal of Research in Music Education, 1998
Investigates the effect of music training on 34 preschoolers' (n=175) Performance IQs based on commonalties among spatial and musical developmental progressions. Finds significantly less gain in IQ for older children in the control group; the relationship of Performance IQ to age was not significant for the treatment group. (CMK)
