Department Chairs in Community Colleges. UCLA Community College Bibliography
Zarkesh, Maryam
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v28 n4 p397-401 2004
The role of a department chair is difficult and complex because it requires one to be an instructor, an administrator, a leader, a manager, and a mediator simultaneously. With the present budget constraints, effective internal leadership at the department level has become indispensable for community colleges. Despite the fact that department chairs play a vital administrative and instructional role, little research has been done regarding the exact roles of department chairs, or on leadership and development training programs. The citations in this annotated bibliography shed some light on the challenges faced by department chairs at community colleges and provide suggestions for addressing these issues.
