From Classroom to Gallery: Building Community and Preserving Heritage
Barron, Kate
Journal of Museum Education, v37 n1 p81-90 Spr 2012
When the levees broke during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, eighty percent of New Orleans flooded, and the citizens who returned to the evacuated city had to rebuild their homes, cultural institutions, and school system. This article records how The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, University of New Orleans, was able to collaborate with a charter school network to establish an early childhood enrichment program to benefit underserved children. In doing so, it realized the potential of a museum's ability to establish a community and pass on an artistic heritage. (Contains 6 notes.)
