A survey of 1,202 students was conducted to identify and categorize elementary students' operational definitions of mathematics. The analysis of student rationales for classifying situations as mathematical or nonmathematical reflected three major views: mathematics as a narrow domain, an exclusive domain, and an upwardly shifting domain.
