The article describes a diagnostic procedure for assessing children's mental images and knowledge of cardinal numbers, 0 through 9. The diagnostic procedure includes the assessment of a child's visual memory, visual perception, symbol recognition, oral naming of numerals, and symbol-set linkage. (Author/SBH)

The SALT (Society for Suggestive-Accelerative Learning and Teaching) remedial reading program was utilized with 18 elementary grade learning-disabled students. Gain scores were high on the Spache oral and silent reading subtest, less so on the word recognition subtest. (SBH)

Prior to attendance at the residential school, students were making an average of approximately .56 grade equivalent gains on academic achievement tests for every year spent in school. During the period under study, children achieved an average of approximately 1.19 yearly grade level increase. (SBH)

Among findings were that as reading proficiency increased, ability to use graphic information increased considerably, although not significantly; and low readers were least efficient in their use of grammatical form class cues, with their errors more often than not being of a different form class. Correlations between the two screening tests and between the screening and criterion measures were inconsistent with prediction rates based on classificational screening test scores. The Visual Aural Digit Span Test (VADS Test), developed and standardized as a diagnostic test for learning disabilities in kindergarten to sixth grade, was adopted for use with seventh graders.
