In response to an earlier article on foreign language learning disabilities in college students, the article reports on a similar study using the Modern Language Aptitude Test and concludes that, as yet, tests are not adequate to determine a disability affecting foreign language learning. (DB)

The study examined the communicative competence of 30 learning disabled and 30 non-learning disabled children (ages 9 to 13) in both referential and semistructured dyadic communication tasks. The study examined the ability of intellectual, achievement, and behavioral data to predict placement of 95 learning disabled students (ages 7 to 15) into a special program. Only 27-33 percent of the variance was accounted for by the battery of assessment instruments in student placement decisions. (Author/DB)

The article attempts to provide a definition of attention that has relevance for rehabilitation therapists working with the brain injured. A review of clinical studies suggests that, although behavioral aspects of attention are amenable to change and improvement, cognitive or information-processing changes are not so easily achieved. The study found that the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) was valid in predicting reading, mathematics, and written expression for Black, Hispanic, and White male students referred for special education services. The K-ABC scores were not valid predictors, however, of written language achievement for referred females. (Author/DB)

The purpose of the survey of 500 resource teachers was to determine the prevalence of social dysfunction among learning-disabled students. Results indicate that up to 38 percent of this student population was in need of social skills intervention but that relatively few were actually receiving the needed intervention. (Author/DB)
