A study of faculty at two comprehensive universities grouped by the time hired (pre-1972, 1972-82, post-1982) indicates distinctive cohorts with characteristic career aspirations, social backgrounds, and professional values that are linked to the prevailing academic market. Findings challenge a prevalent assumption that a single pool of undifferentiated faculty candidates exists. (Author/MSE)
