The Expanding Racial Scoring Gap between Black and White SAT Test Takers.

Between 1976-88, the black-white scoring gap on the Scholastic Assessment Test closed significantly. The improvement in black scores was so strong that some educators predicted that within a generation, the gap would disappear. However, since 1988, the racial gap in SAT scores has become wider, with no compelling evidence that any improvement is in the offing. A major factor in this scoring gap is family income. (SM)
