Portal to the World: AIHEC Virtual Library Opens Doors for Native Research
Kirby, Jane
Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v15 n4 p10-12 Sum 2004
The Internet keeps growing at lightning speed. Now, "tribal college" students have a tool to assist them in locating accurate information quickly: the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) Virtual Library. The AIHEC Virtual Library provides a focused entryway into the Internet research field. Librarians report that it supplements their own collections, provides resources for satellite campuses that don't have their own libraries makes rare ethnic resources available, and most importantly, helps with accreditation. Atkins, who has studied virtual Library designs around the world, says the AIHEC Virtual Library is an unusual peer-to-peer enterprise. Nursing students at United Tribes Technical College utilize the virtual library to access Native American medicine websites.
