Unlike many of her colleagues, the author was not "trying out" teaching as a profession. As early as elementary school, she knew she wanted to teach. Her commitment to teaching grew out of a basic commitment to social justice. From her own experience, she knew that whether or not a child receives a good education often hinges on the child's socioeconomic status, ethnicity and gender. Although Boston is home to world-renowned colleges and universities, its preK-12 public school program is not effectively preparing local students to attend these institutions. Hopeful of positively impacting her students' educational experience, she found through her teaching experience at a comprehensive high school in Boston that she was not a good teacher. In this article, the author stresses that teachers need to be given more professional development opportunities to hone their craft and become good educators.
