Walking the Line: Do Heroes Help Us Choose the Red Road?
Yellow Bird, Dorreen
Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v17 n3 p18-19 Spr 2006
In March 2005, the Red Lake Reservation in Minnesota catapulted into national headlines when Jeffrey Weise shot five students and four adults at the local high school and then turned his weapon on himself. In the same year, it was reported that some 20 young people had committed suicide on the Standing Rock Reservation in Fort Yates, North Dakota. This article discusses the need for role models, heroes, and spiritual leaders to inspire and instruct tribal youth and provide them with the coping skills and guidance to follow the Red Road (the cultural path).
