A Day in Our Lives: Students of the Year Reveal Determination, Heart, and Spirit
Talahongva, Patty
Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v19 n1 p16-22 Fall 2007
As the sun rises across Indian Country students attending tribal colleges wake up to another day of classes, kids, work, and culture. Many tribal college students are not fresh out of high school. They have often worked, married, and had children before returning to school. A big factor in their decisions to attend tribal colleges is maintaining close proximity to their reservations. For the many students who help their extended families, it is crucial to be close to home. The students say the cultural classes these tribal colleges offer are also a bonus for them. "Tribal College Journal" asked several students last spring to keep a log to share with readers. These students were among the 35 chosen by their colleges for the American Indian College Fund Student of the Year award. This article presents logs of what an average day is like for these students.
