Linguistic Differences and Culturally Relevant Interventions for Involving Monolingual Latino Individuals in Research Efforts. Perspective
Adams, Carmen Rivera
Journal of Hispanic Higher Education, v3 n4 p382-392 Oct 2004
Language is an essential element of one's culture. Conducting research in Spanish allows monolingual Latinos to be active participants, usually for the first time, and thereby demonstrates an appreciation for Latinos' cultural worldview. Porter and Villaruel (1993) wrote specific guidelines for the design, conduct, and critique of research specific to African American and Hispanic populations. They encouraged researchers to "begin to identify group-specific values, norms, expectations and words" (p. 63). This recommendation would not only acknowledge the uniqueness of the population under study but would prove helpful in adding to the paucity of existing data related to appropriate interventions to improve outcomes for minority populations. Research design that moves beyond the traditional methods employed in epidemiological studies and includes qualitative designs offers the hope of gaining insight into the lived experience of vulnerable populations. Population-focused research enhances development of integrative strategies and can eventually lead to international insight and collaboration.
