Finding New Meanings: Children's Recognition of Interpretive Ambiguity in Text.
Bonitatibus, Gary J.; Beal, Carole R.
Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, v62 n1 p131-50 Jun 1996
Three experiments, using text designed to suggest two causal interpretations, examined second and fourth graders' recognition of interpretive ambiguity. Found that older children were more likely than younger children to report two interpretations, with initial interpretations reflecting the most recently encountered causal information. Second interpretations were reported more when text was presented as narrative than when presented as expository. (KDFB)
