Interaction between Knowledge and Contexts on Understanding Abstract Mathematical Concepts.
Mevarech, Zemira R.; Stern, Elsbeth
Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, v65 n1 p68-95 Apr 1997
Investigated effects of sparse versus real contexts on understanding abstract mathematical concepts regarding the interpretation of linear graphs. Results of four experiments showed that a sparse context facilitated understanding of abstract concepts more than real contexts. Activation of abstract logic-mathematical knowledge structures was elicited in the sparse contexts and the application of everyday knowledge occurred in the real contexts. (KDFB)
