The Emergence of Perceptual Category Representations in Young Infants: A Connectionist Analysis.
Quinn, Paul C.; Johnson, Mark H.
Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, v66 n2 p236-63 Aug 1997
Reports on connectionist models that simulated the formation of global-level and basic-level representations in young infants; revealed a global-to-basic order of category emergence; uncovered formation of two global-level representations--initial "self-organizing" perceptual level and subsequent "trained," non-perceptual level; and displayed gradual transition from perceptual global-level to perceptual basic-level representation with increasing exposure to training stimuli.
