An Exploration of Why Preschoolers Perform Differently than Do Adults in Audiovisual Speech Perception Tasks.
Desjardins, Renee N.; And Others
Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, v66 n1 p85-110 Jul 1997
Examined whether experience correctly producing consonants plays role in developing underlying representation which mediates perception of visible speech. Tested preschoolers (divided by their making of substitution errors) and adults in auditory-only, visual-only, and audiovisual conditions. Found children overall showed less visual influence and substituters were poorer at lip reading and showed less visual influence than nonsubstituters, supporting hypothesis. (EV)
