Mathematical Problem Solving and Working Memory in Children with Learning Disabilities: Both Executive and Phonological Processes Are Important.
Swanson, H. Lee; Sachse-Lee, Carole
Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, v79 n3 p294-321 Jul 2001
This study explored relationship between working memory (WM) and mathematical problem solving, comparing children with learning disabilities (LD) to chronologically age-matched and younger achievement-matched children on measures of WM, phonological processing, problem-solving, and word problem-solving accuracy. Found support for notion that information activated from long-term memory, rather than phonological processing, mediates relationship between executive processing and accuracy in LD children.
