Student Financial Aid and Participation in Swedish Higher Education. I: The Effects of Background Variables on Transition to Higher Education.

The effects of social background, gender, and academic achievement on transition rate to higher education were studied in three nationally representative samples of the Swedish population. Student financial aid availability was also assessed. Social background and achievement equally influenced the transition rate, while gender had little effect. (TJH)
