Influence of Pedagogical Expertise and Feedback on Assessing Student Comprehension from Nonverbal Behavior.
Webb, James M.; Diana, Ellen M.; Luft, Pamela; Brooks, Elizabeth W.; Brenna, Elizabeth L.
Journal of Educational Research, v91 n2 p89-97 Nov-Dec 1997
Novice to expert teachers were tested for ability to judge student comprehension from nonverbal cues. Participants observed classroom videotapes, completed discussions with and without feedback, and made judgments. Experts made more accurate judgments, especially with feedback; were more confident of judgments following feedback; and had holistic knowledge about students, learning, instruction, and classrooms that helped them more accurately interpret nonverbal cues.
