Everyday Scientific Literacy: Do Students Use Information about the Social Context and Methods of Research To Evaluate News Briefs about Science?
Zimmerman, Corinne; Bisanz, Gay L.; Bisanz, Jeffrey
Alberta Journal of Educational Research, v44 n2 p188-207 Sum 1998
College students judged the credibility of specially constructed news briefs about science. Their credibility ratings were influenced by area of research, plausibility of conclusions, and quality of research methods, but not by the social context of the research. Students justified their judgments with information in reports, prior knowledge, and prior beliefs. Contains 53 references and sample test materials. (Author/SV)
