Garvin, Joan – Journal of Drug Education, 1982
Fifth- and sixth-grade students (N=600) were assessed regarding smoking activity, parents' smoking, four dimensions of self-esteem, and attitudes toward school. Multivariate analyses showed students were more likely to begin smoking if they had parents who smoked, had low self-esteem, and disliked school and feared failure. (Author)

Used responses to an anonymous questionnaire to evaluate the effects of a drug education program among high school students. Results indicated a relatively long lasting increase in knowledge but no significant effects of the program on either attitudes or self-reported past or anticipated behavior. (Author)

Schaps, Eric; And Others – Journal of Drug Education, 1982
A drug education course was taught to seventh and eighth graders and then evaluated. Class level univariate analyses of variance and covariance showed that the course produced predicted effects for grade seven females, but not for grade seven males or grade eight males or females. (Author)

Examined the support for, and consequences of, youths' drug involvement in neighborhoods having different degrees of toughness and drug use. Investigated predictors of drug treatment retention of individual clients in terms of a contextual model. Found that the socioecological variables predicted the types of clients that entered treatment in terms of clinic level (aggregate) variables, and these predicted the corresponding individual level client variables and client outcomes. Surveyed college women and men and found that caffeine was consumed by a large proportion of the respondents. Women consumed a larger amount of caffeine and used more substances containing this drug. An increase in caffeine usage with increased psychic stress was observed for women only. (Author)
