A collaborative model based on feminist pedagogy was used to assess gender-specific programs for juvenile female offenders. Criteria for the provision of emotional and physical safety and cultural appropriateness were used to identify areas for improvement, especially in terms of discourse, consensus, and equity in voice. Data from 46 male and 54 female adolescent offenders showed that females experienced more sexual abuse; the level of physical abuse was similar, although females experienced more date abuse. Interventions to remediate the effects of abuse were suggested for correctional education programs. (JOW)

A study investigated gender differences and similarities in suicide ideation and attempts and rationales for suicidal behavior by adolescent offenders (n=84). Results indicate that female adolescent offenders think about and attempt suicide significantly more often than their male counterparts. (JOW)
