Becoming Characters: Deepening Young Children's Literary Understanding through Drama

Learning through drama and other art forms enriches children's learning by expanding the possibilities for how children create and express meaning (Adomat, 2009; Berghoff, Egawa, & Harste, 2000). The arts are rarely suggested as a way of opening up broader understandings for young readers; yet drama has been shown to be beneficial in myriad ways for developing literacy (Galda, 2005; Galda & West, 1995; Wagner, 1998). By becoming characters in stories through drama, young children are able to immerse themselves in the story world and develop literary understanding that might stretch beyond what is expected for that age group (Adomat, 2009). This study examines how young readers develop understandings of characters through drama.
