Looking beyond Lewis Structures: A General Chemistry Molecular Modeling Experiment Focusing on Physical Properties and Geometry
Linenberger, Kimberly J.; Cole, Renee S.; Sarkar, Somnath
Journal of Chemical Education, v88 n7 p962-965 Jul 2011
We present a guided-inquiry experiment using Spartan Student Version, ready to be adapted and implemented into a general chemistry laboratory course. The experiment provides students an experience with Spartan Molecular Modeling software while discovering the relationships between the structure and properties of molecules. Topics discussed within the experiment include dipole moments, bond angles, bond lengths, selected periodic properties, resonance structures, electron density potential maps, and molecular shapes.
