Peer reviewedTurner, John A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
The use of semiconductors as electrodes for electrochemistry requires an understanding of both solid-state physics and electrochemistry, since phenomena associated with both disciplines are seen in semiconductor/electrolyte systems. The interfacial energetics of these systems are discussed. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science, Electricity
Peer reviewedSpitler, M. T. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Photochemical data are presented to indicate how use of sensitizing dyes extends the spectral range to which the substrate semiconductor is sensitive. Data demonstrate that specific energetic requirements exist for a dye to be an effective sensitizer. Also shows how photooxidation is increased by increasing surface concentration of the dye. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education
Peer reviewedEllis, Arthur B. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Provides an overview of the properties of photoluminescence (PL), a description of their pertubation in a photoelectrochemical cell, and a discussion of the complementary information obtained from PL properties. (JN)
Descriptors: College Science, Electric Batteries, Electricity, Higher Education
Peer reviewedWrighton, Mark S. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Deliberate modification of semiconductor photoelectrodes to improve durability and enhance rate of desirable interfacial redox processes is discussed for a variety of systems. Modification with molecular-based systems or with metals/metal oxides yields results indicating an important role for surface modification in devices for fundamental study…

Peer reviewedParkinson, Bruce – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Provides an overview of advances made in the field of photoelectrochemistry. Includes a short historical account of the development of the field, a review of the state-of-the-art of photoelectrochemical energy conversion and future prospects. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Electric Batteries, Higher Education
Peer reviewedDeLorenzo, Ron, Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Provides an exercise to help students understand how small atoms are. Also provides a problem to help beginning college students understand the concepts of unit conversions. (JN)
Descriptors: Atomic Structure, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education
Peer reviewedLambert, Joseph B. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Dating, conservation, prospection, and composition (knowledge of the composition of artifacts of other materials) are four applications of chemistry to archaeology. Examples of the latter application (composition) are discussed, focusing on procedures used and types of information obtained. (JN)
Descriptors: Archaeology, Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedMoore, John W., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Describes use of Warnier-Orr program design method for preparing general chemistry tutorial on ideal gas calculations. This program (BASIC-PLUS) is available from the author. Also describes a multipurpose computerized class record system at the University of Toledo. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Oriented Programs
Peer reviewedGilbert, George L., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Describes a lecture demonstration of a solid state phase transition using a thermodynamic material which changes state at room temperature. Also describes a demonstration on kinetics using a "Big Bang" (trade mark) calcium carbide cannon. Indicates that the cannon is safe to use. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Demonstrations (Educational), High Schools
Peer reviewedWarrington, Susan C. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Because students were not retaining several key chemistry concepts, a series of problems, called nightmares (for first-year students) and Igors (for second-year chemistry students), was devised so that the concepts would be used repeatedly. Two examples each of nightmares and Igors are provided. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, High Schools, Learning Activities, Retention (Psychology)
Peer reviewedGerlovich, Jack A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Discusses various aspects related to negligence on the part of chemistry teachers. Areas addressed include negligence in tort law, avoiding negligence suits, proper instructions, proper supervision, equipment maintenance, and other considerations such as sovereign immunity, and contributory versus comparative negligence. (JN)
Descriptors: Accident Prevention, Chemistry, High Schools, Laboratory Safety
Peer reviewedAllen, Ralph O. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Discusses the generation, collection, and disposal of hazardous and other wastes in the chemistry laboratory. Offers suggestions related to these three areas to provide a safe teaching environment, including minimizing amounts of reagents used (and potentially wasted) by scaling down experiments. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education, Laboratory Procedures
Peer reviewedPatel, Gordhan N.; Yang, Nan-Loh – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Describes 14 experiments that illustrate, via color changes, a broad scope of fundamental phenomena in polymer science. The experiments, suitable for high school through graduate level, require only test tubes, filter paper, heat source (hot plate or hair drier), and ultra-violet light source. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science, High Schools
Peer reviewedMacCarthy, Patrick – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Presents a classification scheme that organizes concentration units (such as molarity) into four logical classes. These classes clearly illustrate relationships and differences between the various units. The scheme is operationally simple to apply and removes the apparent arbitrariness of definitions as normally presented. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Nomenclature, Chemistry, Classification, College Science
Peer reviewedBelloli, Robert C. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Discusses the confusion and erroneous conclusions that can result from the overuse and misuse of the circle notation to represent aromaticity in polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons. Includes nature of the problem, textbook treatment, and a possible compromise method of representation. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Bonding, Chemistry, College Science, High Schools
