Roman, Pascual; Gutierrez-Zorrilla, Juan M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Shows how the Archimedes method is used to determine the density of a single crystal of ammonium oxalate monohydrate. Also shows how to calculate the density of other chemicals when they are available as single crystals. Experimental procedures and materials needed are included. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Crystallography, Density (Matter)

Baird, Donald M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Biomimetic chemistry is concerned with the synthesis of small, molecular weight molecules which mimic the properties of metal-containing sites within certain biologically significant species. A series of experiments for an advanced undergraduate laboratory is described as a way to introduce this area into the chemistry curriculum. (JN)

Foster, N.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Describes an experiment in which students use ion exchange chromatography to separate a mixture of chloro complexes of transition metal ions and then use spectrophotometry to define qualitatively the efficiency of the ion exchange columns. Background information, materials needed, and procedures used are included. (JN)

Hairfield, E. M.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Reports a consecutive first-order reaction for which the concentrations of reactant, intermediate, and products can be determined simulataneously. This reaction is the epoxidation of 2,5-di-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (I) by alkaline hydroperoxidation using tert-butyl hydroperoxide and benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (Triton B) catalyst.…

Zwaard, A. W.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Presents a programed method that inventories and classifies hazards. 8iscusses the following topics: (1) student and hazard source, (2) elimination of the source, (3) adaptation of the source, (4) isolation of the source, (5) adjustment of the surroundings, (6) isolation of man, and (7) personal protective equipment. (MVL)

Chesick, John P. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Uses simple pulse NMR experiments to discuss Fourier transforms. Studies the generation of spin echoes used in the imaging procedure. Shows that pulse NMR experiments give signals that are additions of sinusoids of differing amplitudes, frequencies, and phases. (MVL)

Schobert, Harold H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Describes the peat to coal process. Investigates the organic, inorganic, and sulfur components of coal. Outlines how varying percentages of each are formed. (MVL)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, Coal

Kandel, Marjorie; Ikan, Raphael – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Provides a point of view that the organic lab is a good place for the student to use and learn problem solving skills while performing the cookbook experiments. Notes that an equilibrium between the theoretical and practical aspects of organic chemistry should be established. (MVL)

Carlson, G. Lynn – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Outlines a one day chemistry seminar which is part of the Elementary Science Fellows Programs at the Wisconsin Regional Staff Development Center. Lists the topics of the program and some activities that were used. Discusses the status of the program. (MVL)

Schuerman, George; Bruzan, Raymond – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Presents an overview of coatings along with paint preparation labs. Provides students with information about and methods for preparing a product that is an integral part of daily life. Gives methodology which can be used to prepare oil based and water based paints. (MVL)
Descriptors: Art Products, Chemical Nomenclature, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry

Matsuo, Tsutomu; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Presented is a photoelectric colorimeter which can be assembled by the student. Reports that it can do many of the same analyses as the SPEC 20 but at a greatly reduced cost using older technology. Presents several experiments to use with the colorimeter. (MVL)

Warneck, Peter – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Discusses the mechanism and the change of pH during the reaction. Notes that a dramatic rise in pH occurs when the reaction nears completion. Evaluates theories by other authors. (MVL)

Gilbert, George L., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Discusses three broad classes of magnetic behavior: diamagnetic, paramagnetic, and ferromagnetic. Presents a simple lecture demonstration using an overhead projector to synthesize triiron tetraoxide and to show its interaction with a magnetic field and comparing it to a paramagnetic material. (MVL)

Brady, K. T. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Presents a device to illustrate the concepts of entropy of mixing and the contribution of one term in the Gibb's equation. Notes the device is relatively easy to construct and provides a visual demonstration on diffusion. (MVL)

Jackman, Donald C.; Rillema, D. Paul – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Reports a method of preparation for tris(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) and tris(2,2'-bipyridine)cobalt(III) that will shorten the preparation time by approximately 3 hours. Notes the time for synthesis and isolation of compound one was 1 hour (yield 38 percent) while compound two took 50 minutes (yield 71%). (MVL)
