Peer reviewedCassebaum, H.; Schufle, J. A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Concludes that Carl Scheele first observed oxygen and clearly understood what he was observing in June 1771, when he heated manganese dioxide with concentrated sulfuric acid. This was more than three years before Lavoisier or Priestley (who is usually credited with the discovery of oxygen) made similar observations. (Author/MLH)

Peer reviewedJournal of Chemical Education, 1975
Describes a reversal development process which produces black and white positive slides from two Kodak black and white films: Microfile AHU 6552, and High Contrast Copy Film 5069. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Educational Media, Films
Peer reviewedBent, Henry A.; Power, James D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Illustrates the frustrating search for the best way to teach college chemistry, by pointing out that there are problems associated with any type of curriculum, teaching technique, or grading method. Includes statistics on a Keller type physical chemistry course. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Educational Problems, Higher Education
Peer reviewedTrumbore, Conrad N. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Describes "Chemistry and the Human Environment," a one-semester experimental course for freshman and sophomore nonscience majors. Fundamental chemical principles are introduced in class only on a "need to know" basis; each student investigates a special topic of his own choosing relating an urgent social problem quite specifically to detailed…
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Course Descriptions, Curriculum
Peer reviewedLivant, Peter – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Describes a "feedback course" offered at Brown University, in which undergraduates redesigned the introductory organic chemistry laboratory. The students specified objectives for the ideal lab, then devised laboratory experiments. Laboratory safety was stressed, all dangerous reagents and solvents were eliminated, and toxicological data were…

Peer reviewedLazzarini, E.; Bettoni, M. Mandelli – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Designed for first-year students of radiochemistry and atomic physics, this experiment tests the fundamental Moseley Law and introduces the method of elemental chemical analysis by X-ray fluorescence. (Author/MLH)
Descriptors: Atomic Structure, Chemistry, College Science, Curriculum
Peer reviewedJones, Richard F. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Discusses the case study method of teaching high school chemistry as a supplement to traditional methods. The case study, provided by the instructor, generally focuses on a socially important issue related to chemistry; the student investigates the problem for one or two weeks and provides a solution. (MLH)

Peer reviewedMazza, R. J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Describes an experiment designed to acquaint the chemistry student with polymerization reactions, vacuum techniques, liquid scintillation counting, gas-liquid chromatography, and the handling of radioactive materials. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedLandman, A. D.; Eskin, N. A. M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Describes an experiment in which rat adipose tissue samples are exposed to labeled glucose; insulin is added to one sample. Subsequent scintillation counting demonstrates the ability of insulin to facilitate the entry of glucose into the tissue. (MLH)
