Peer reviewedWhite, John M.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1972
A freshman chemistry course was taught with emphasis on self-pacing, student-instructor interaction, and individual understanding of each topic. Student were graded after each unit and on the final exam. Results of the investigation showed higher grades and greater student participation compared to previous groups taught by the lecture method. (PS)

Peer reviewedJournal of Chemical Education, 1974
Discusses recent changes in higher education, involving psychological depression of faculty and academic administrators due to public skepticism toward colleges and universities. Suggests college and university professors establish a balance among teaching, fundamental research, and service to recreate the boom days of the mid-1960's. (CC)
Descriptors: Administrative Policy, College Faculty, Editorials, Higher Education
Peer reviewedSlabaugh, W. H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1974
Presents some materials for use in demonstration and experimentation of corrosion processes, including corrosion stimulation and inhibition. Indicates that basic concepts of electrochemistry, crystal structure, and kinetics can be extended to practical chemistry through corrosion explanation. (CC)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Instructional Materials, Laboratory Experiments
Peer reviewedMoore, John H., Jr.; O'Haver, Thomas C. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1974
Discusses offering of a modular course designed to acquaint the student with methods of observing and quantitatively measuring the properties and reactions of chemicals. Included is a brief sketch of course content and requirements. (CC)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedPilar, Frank – Journal of Chemical Education, 1974
Criticizes recent Ph.D. programs carried out in many universities after World War II. Suggests university departments re-institute high quality two-year master's programs designed to train those who plan to make careers in chemistry at an applied level. (CC)
Descriptors: Administrative Policy, Chemistry, Doctoral Programs, Graduate Study
Peer reviewedOchiai, Ei-Ichiro – Journal of Chemical Education, 1974
Discusses some important aspects of bioinorganic chemistry, including interactions of organisms with metallic and nonmetallic elements and compounds. Indicates that many environmental problems are created by human exploitation of nature and technologies if studied from a bioinorganic chemical viewpoint. (CC)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedKlatt, Leon N.; Sheafer, James C. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1974
Discusses the general design and operation of a quantitative analysis laboratory which is relevant to the student's career objectives and provides reliable and objective criteria for judging student performance. Included are a list of core experiments and a description of student responses. (CC)
