Schilling, J. W.; Weing, Galen W., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
A device is described to assist in designing prototype interfaces between a minicomputer and an external device. This device is especially useful in undergraduate student projects, where time is limited. (BB)

Moore, John W.; Collins, Ronald W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
This first article includes background material on computers that will be of value in understanding subsequent papers in the series. It also discusses the advantages and problems of implementing computer-based educational materials at locations and on machines for which the materials were not originally designed. (BB)

Binkley, David; Dessy, Raymond – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Techniques for digitalizing analog signal data are presented and compared. The techniques presented are: boxcar averaging, ensemble averaging, unweighted digital filter, weighted digital filter, and analog filter. (BB)

Wohltjen, Henry; Dessy, Raymond – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
The design and use of an instrument simulator is described. Used for student laboratory experiments illustrating the use of mini-computers, it can provide, at very low cost, a repetitive, repeatable output to duplicate the readout of various instruments such as electrochemical experiments, mass spectrometers, pulsed magnetic experiments,…

Summerville, David A.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
The bonding of dioxygen in metal-dioxygen complexes is discussed, paying particular attention to the problems encountered in assigning conventional oxidation numbers to both the metal center and coordinated dioxygen. Complexes of iron, cobalt, chromium, and manganese are considered. (BB)

Hathaway, Brian – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Describes undergraduate chemistry curricula in which the student is asked to either build a model of one asymmetric unit in the unit cell and to indicate the positions of the symmetry-related units by putting in key atoms, or to identify on a prebuild model the asymetric and symmetry-related units. (BB)

Barrett, Edward J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Molecular models are described which are suitable for illustrating the nucleic acids. The same principles used to construct these could be applied to models of polypeptides. (BB)

Eaton, S. S.; Eaton, G. R. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
A new, small magnetic susceptibility system is described which can be constructed from commercially available components for less than one hundred dollars for use with a standard laboratory balance. (BB)

Ozsogomonyan, Ardas; Loftus, Drew – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Chemistry pretest scores, high school chemistry grades and, to a greater extent, math SAT scores were useful predictors of college general chemistry grades. Regression analysis of all these predictors combined was used to construct an expectancy table which is being used to identify and advise underprepared students. (BB)
