Demystifying Introductory Chemistry. Part 4: An Approach to Reaction Thermodynamics through Enthalpies, Entropies, and Free Energies of Atomization.
Spencer, James N.; And Others
Journal of Chemical Education, v73 n7 p631-36 Jul 1996
Presents an alternative approach to teaching reaction thermodynamics in introductory chemistry courses using calculations of enthalpies, entropies, and free energies of atomization. Uses a consistent concept, that of decomposition of a compound to its gaseous atoms, to discuss not only thermodynamic parameters but also equilibrium and stoichiometry. Promotes a fuller understanding of the relationship between structure and reaction properties. (JRH)
