Peer reviewedRosenberg, Robert M.; Peticolas, Warner L. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A retrospective view of Henry's law and its applicability in any specific system at a finite concentration is tested. It can be concluded that Henry's law is only a limiting law and is adequate at low mole fractions but is useful for practical purposes where high precision is not required.

Peer reviewedDavid, Carl W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
Equations related to the computation of fugacity of nonideal gases is presented, with special emphasize on a nontraditional equation of State's fugacity and the van der Waals fugacity. It is seen that both the equations include long-range attractive forces and short-range repulsive forces and thus have similar behaviour.

Peer reviewedDavid, Carl W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A mathematical model of a non-ideal solution is presented, where it is shown how and where the non-ideality manifests itself in the standard thermodynamics tableau. Examples related to the non-ideal solution thermodynamics study are also included.

Peer reviewedScala, Alfred A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The underlying ideas of the Polanyi principle and Hammond's postulate in relation to the simple free halogenation reactions and their selectivity and thermodynamics is presented. The results indicate that the chlorine atom exhibits a slightly less selectivity in the liquid phase as compared to in the gas phase.

Peer reviewedBruckner, Christian – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
Studies in relation to the silver complexes of porphyrins, corroles and carbaporphyrins are presented especially with relation to silver in the oxidation states II and III. It is seen that the Ag(sub III) complex was electrochemically readily and reversibly reduced to the corresponding Ag(sub II) complex, thus indicating that the complex could be…

Peer reviewedLoveland, W.; Gallant, A.; Joiner, C. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The recent developments in nuclear chemistry education are presented and an attempt is made to collect supplemental materials relating to the study and practice of nuclear chemistry. The Living Textbook of Nuclear Chemistry functions as an authoritative Web site with supplemental material for teaching nuclear and radiochemistry.

Peer reviewedSlocum, Laura E.; Towns Marcy Hamby; Zielinski, Theresa Julia – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
Computer supported collaborative learning, cooperative learning combined with electronic communication, physical chemistry online modules, use of discussion boards, its advantages and limitations are experimented and discussed. The most important finding is the example of effective online faculty facilitation and interaction.

Peer reviewedFry, Charles G. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded in December 2003 to chemist Paul C. Lauterbur and physicist Peter Mansfield for the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a long overdue recognition of the huge impact MRI has had in medical diagnostics and research is mentioned. MRI was derived, and remains an extension of nuclear magnetic resonance…

Edward Frankland and Norman Lockyer researched upon a gaseous spectra in relation to the physical constitution of the sun and named it as "helium" (from Greek "helios" meaning "sun"). Since Lockyer apparently never formally proposed the name in print, it is not known why he chose to use a metallic end "ium".

Peer reviewedStewart, Graham G. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
Brewing of beer, one of the oldest biotechnology industries was one of the earliest processes to be undertaken on commercial basis. Biological instability involves contamination of bacteria, yeast, or mycelia fungi and there is always a risk in brewing that beer can become contaminated by micro-organisms.
