Using an NMR Spectrometer to Do Magnetic Resonance Imaging: An Undergraduate Physical Chemistry Laboratory Experiment
Steinmetz, Wayne E.; Maher, M. Cyrus
Journal of Chemical Education, v84 n11 p1830-1831 Nov 2007
A conventional Fourier-transform NMR spectrometer with a triple-axis gradient probe can function as a MRI imager. In this experiment students gain hands-on experience with MRI while they learn about important principles underlying the practice of NMR, such as gradients, multi-dimensional spectroscopy, and relaxation. Students image a biological specimen that fits in a 5-mm NMR tube with the multi-slice-multi-echo (MSME) method and measure the transverse relaxation time, T[subscript 2], of water in selected regions of interest.
