Xie, Qingji; Li, Zhili; Deng, Chunyan; Liu, Meiling; Zhang, Youyu; Ma, Ming; Xia, Shaoxi; Xiao, Xiaoming; Yin, Dulin; Yao, Shouzhuo – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
A real-time, labeled-free and nanogram-sensitive mass sensor, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) is used to monitor a cyclic voltammetric deposition of polyaniline (PANI). The results determined that the efficiency for PANI deposition and the anion-doping ratio is calculated in one single cyclic voltammetric.

Blankespoor, Ronald L.; Hogendoorn, Stephanie; Pearson, Andrea – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The reactivity and orientation effects of a substituent are analyzed by using HPLC to determine the competitive nitration of the benzene-toluene and benzene-fluorobenzene mixtures. The results have shown that HPLC is an excellent instrumental method to use in analyzing these mixtures.

Bonicamp, Judith M.; Clark, Roy W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
Short circuiting an electrochemical cell is an unreported but persistent error in the electrochemistry textbooks. It is suggested that diagrams depicting a cell delivering usable current to a load be postponed, the theory of open-circuit galvanic cells is explained, the voltages from the tables of standard reduction potentials is calculated and…

Stockland, Robert A. Jr.; Wilson, Brian D.; Goodman, Caton C.; Giese, Barret J.; Shrimp, Frederick L., II – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The connectivity of a hexane-soluble silver salt is established by using NMR spectroscopy to describe the synthesis, characterization and reactivity of the salt. The results found hexane-soluble silver to be an effective transfer agent.

Fetterolf, Monty L. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The use of generated intensity distributions as overlays on the HCl rotational-vibrational FTIR spectrum is presented as an effective method to integrate lab work into the physical chemistry lecture. The overlays that best match the actual HCl spectrum are generated using a pre-exponential factor of 2J+2.

Peer reviewedPierce, David T.; Pierce, Thomas W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
Demonstrations assessment techniques are shown to be more effective in the teaching process, as compared to the normally used laboratory topics and aids. These assessments improve learning and help students learn the principles or concepts underlying chemistry.

Rasmussen, Seth C. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The pseudoscientific views in educated society are facing increased problems, which needs the rectification of current deficiency of historical context in science education. This can change the way the students view claims and ideas presented to them.

Horta, Arturo; Pastoriza, M. Alejandra – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
Various methods for the determination of the molecular weight distribution (MWD) of different polymer samples are presented. The study shows that the molecular weight averages and distribution of a polymerization completely depend on the characteristics of the reaction itself.

Smith, Rachel; Cantrell, Kevin – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
Laboratory experiment is conducted to give the students practical experience with the principles of electronic absorbance spectroscopy. This straightforward approach creates a powerful tool for exploring many of the aspects of quantitative absorbance spectroscopy.

Grung, Bjorn; Nodland, Egil; Forland, Geir Martin – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The analysis of the infrared spectra of an alcohol dissolved in carbon tetrachloride gives a better understanding of the various multivariate curve resolution methods. The resulting concentration profile is found to be very useful for calculating the degree of association and equilibrium constants of different compounds.

Chetcuti, Michael J.; Ritleng, Vincent – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The three step synthesis is presented to allow the functionalization of an aromatic amine by forming new C-C and C-N bonds via an intramolecular C-H activation under mild conditions. The reactions are stoichiometric and allow the students to isolate the different organometallic intermediates.
