Comparison of data on all children referred for suspected autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the Australian Capital Territory in 1997 and 1989 found a 200% increase in ASD diagnoses in 1997 despite a population decrease; a wider age range in 1997; a 26% increase in milder cases; and a decrease in the ratio of boys to girls.
