Miller, Scott A.; Rodriguez, Nicole M.; Rourke, Ami J. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2015
We evaluated the efficacy of a procedure that incorporated a mirror to teach gross motor imitation with a 2-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with autistic disorder. Responses taught with a mirror were acquired more quickly than responses taught without the mirror and were maintained after the mirror was removed. These data indicate that a…

Ditzian, Kyle; Wilder, David A.; King, Allison; Tanz, Jeanine – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2015
The Performance Diagnostic Checklist-Human Services (PDC-HS) is an informant-based tool designed to assess the environmental variables that contribute to poor employee performance in human services settings. We administered the PDC-HS to 3 supervisors to assess the variables that contributed to poor performance by 4 staff members when securing…

Ward-Horner, John C.; Pittenger, Alexis; Pace, Gary; Fienup, Daniel M. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2014
When the overall magnitude of reinforcement is matched between 2 alternative work schedules, some students prefer to complete all of their work for continuous access to a reinforcer (continuous work) rather than distributed access to a reinforcer while they work (discontinuous work). We evaluated a student's preference for continuous work by…

Pennington, Robert; Delano, Monica; Scott, Renee – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2014
We evaluated a multicomponent intervention for improving the cover-letter writing skills of individuals with intellectual disabilities. An intervention that included modeling, self-monitoring, prompting, and feedback increased correct performance for all participants. In addition, the skill was demonstrated across audiences.

Weldy, Christina R.; Rapp, John T.; Capocasa, Kelli – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2014
We trained 9 behavioral staff members to conduct 2 brief preference assessments using 30-min video presentations that contained instructions and modeling. After training, we evaluated each staff member's implementation of the assessments in situ. Results indicated that 1 or 2 training sessions for each method were sufficient for teaching each…

Homlitas, Christa; Rosales, Rocío; Candel, Lindsay – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2014
We evaluated the effectiveness of a behavioral skills training package to teach implementation of Phases 1, 2, and 3A of the picture exchange communication system (PECS) to teachers employed at a therapeutic center for children with autism. Probes in the natural environment and follow-up were conducted with children who were assigned to work with…

Loughrey, Tara Olivia; Betz, Alison M.; Majdalany, Lina M.; Nicholson, Katie – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2014
We evaluated the effects of instructive feedback (IF) on the emergence of spoken category names with 2 children who had been diagnosed with autism. IF stimuli were presented during listener discrimination training and consisted of presenting the category name associated with each target stimulus. Results suggest that participants acquired the…

Hanley, Gregory P.; Fahmie, Tara A.; Heal, Nicole A. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2014
In an attempt to address risk factors associated with extensive nonfamilial child care, we implemented the preschool life skills (PLS) program (Hanley, Heal, Tiger, & Ingvarsson, 2007) in two community-based Head Start classrooms. A multiple baseline design across classrooms, repeated across skills, showed that the program resulted in a 5-fold…

Cook, Andrew; Bradley-Johnson, Sharon; Johnson, C. Merle – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2014
We evaluated the effects of white noise played through headphones on off-task behavior, percentage of items completed, and percentage of items completed correctly for 3 students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Headphones plus white noise were associated with decreases in off-task behavior relative to baseline and…

Trahan, Maranda A.; Donaldson, Jeanne M.; McNabney, Matthew K.; Kahng, SungWoo – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2014
We examined whether adults with dementia could learn to emit a picture-based communication response and if this skill would maintain over time. Three women with moderate to severe dementia were taught to exchange a picture card for a highly preferred activity. All participants quickly learned to exchange the picture card and maintained this…

Delfs, Caitlin H.; Frampton, Sarah E. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2014
Recent literature reviews have highlighted the need to better understand the relation between speaker and listener behavior when teaching learners with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The current paper outlines the practical implications of evaluating the emergence of tact and listener behavior during instruction for the opposite relation, as…

Humphreys, Tiffany; Polick, Amy S.; Howk, Laura L.; Thaxton, Jackie R.; Ivancic, Alison P. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2013
A common recommendation with least-to-most prompting is to repeat the discriminative stimulus (S[superscript D]) with each successive prompt (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2007). However, few studies have evaluated this recommendation. We compared repeating the S[superscript D] to presenting the S[superscript D] once when teaching intraverbal…

Greer, Brian D.; Neidert, Pamela L.; Dozier, Claudia L.; Payne, Steven W.; Zonneveld, Kimberley L. M.; Harper, Amy M. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2013
We conducted functional analyses (FA) with 4 typically developing preschool children during ongoing classroom activities and evaluated treatments that were based on FA results. Results of each child's FA suggested social-positive reinforcement functions, and differential reinforcement of alternative behavior plus time-out was effective in…

Kodak, Tiffany; Fisher, Wayne W.; Paden, Amber; Dickes, Nitasha – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2013
We evaluated a discrete-trial functional analysis implemented by regular classroom staff in a classroom setting. The results suggest that the discrete-trial functional analysis identified a social function for each participant and may require fewer staff than standard functional analysis procedures.

Harrison, Antonio M.; Pyles, David A. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2013
We evaluated verbal instruction and shaping using TAG (teaching with acoustical guidance) to improve tackling by 3 high school football players. Verbal instruction and shaping improved tackling for all 3 participants. In addition, performance was maintained as participants moved more quickly through the tackling procedure.
