School Success for Children with Special Needs: Everything You Need to Know to Help Your Child Learn. Knowledge Essentials
James, Amy
Jossey-Bass, An Imprint of Wiley
A new book in the Knowledge Essential series, "School Success for Children with Special Needs" offers parents a guide for understanding and navigating the often-confusing special education system to ensure that their children get the best education possible. It tells them: (1) How to know if a child has physical, learning, or emotional disabilities; (2) How the latest changes to the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) affect a child's education; (3) How to help formulate a child's Individual Family Services Plan (IFSP) or Individualized Education Program (IEP); (4) Information on the many ways schools and teachers can accommodate children with disabilities; (5) How to assess a child's progress; (6) How they can help their children be successful at school and in life by reinforcing basic skills at every age; (7) How to plan for transitioning a child to the wider world; and (8) The kind of paperwork they can expect to encounter. The book is organized into three parts: (1) Know Your Rights; (2) The Special-Needs Classroom; and (3) Special-Needs Tips by Grade Level. The following are appended: (1) Acronyms; (2) The Forms; (3) IEP Sample Form; (4) Glossary; (5) Disability Checklists by Age; and (6) Internet Resources. A list of references and an appendix are also included.
