Discovering What Works for Struggling Readers: Journeys of Exploration With Primary-Grade Students
Wirt, Bev; Bryan, Carolyn Domaleski; Wesley, Kathleen Davies
International Reading Association (NJ3)
Through a yearlong collaboration, three literacy intervention teachers identified five teaching principles that were consistently effective with their struggling readers: (1) Meaningful conversation, (2) Choice, (3) Pertinent instruction, (4) Consistent support, and (5) Purpose. Classroom vignettes illustrate how critical these principles can be to successful reading instruction, and easy-to-use activities help to incorporate them in the classroom. The following chapters are included: (1) Working With Struggling Readers: How Our Journey Began; (2) A Year With Allison: Finding a Purpose; (3) A Year With Joshua: Growth in Communication and Confidence; (4) A Year With Brianna: A Different Kind of Success Story; and (5) Working Miracles in Your Classroom. A Note From the Series Editor; Kids InSight Review Board; References; and an Index are also included.
