Learning from Success: High Achieving Deaf Students
Powers, Steve
Deafness and Education International, v13 n3 p92-109 Sep 2011
This article reports the main findings of a study of twenty-seven high achieving deaf students in England which sought the views of the deaf students, their parents, teachers, and other school professionals on reasons for success. It is a replication of a previous American study but in a UK context. The main findings match those of the American study in identifying the two key factors in explaining success being deaf children's personal attributes and character and the influence of parents. The author argues that this provides further support to the notion that parents are the key to deaf children's success and that work with parents is one of the most crucial aspects of the work of teachers.
