The Empowerment Principle: Casualties of Two Schools' Failure to Grasp the Nettle
Gordon, Jacki; Turner, Katrina M.
Health Education, v104 n4 p226-240 2004
Pupil autonomy, empowerment, and clarity of school rules are factors underpinning school effectiveness in terms of supporting pupil health and education. This paper considers data collected from 27 one-to-one staff interviews conducted in two secondary schools. Analysis indicated that the schools subscribed to different philosophies regarding pupil management. One school was largely authoritarian in its approach and the other was overly lenient. This paper emphasises the importance of furthering democratic principles of pupil participation within the context of clear rules and boundaries. (Contains 2 tables and 1 note.)
