Results from a study of 75 pregnant women suggest that previous pregnancy experience does not substantially alter women's knowledge of appropriate pregnancy-related health practices. Implications for the design of curricula and delivery of prenatal education services are briefly outlined. (IAH)

A weight management program utilized the participant's own data for the participant to (1) understand energy balance; (2) compare his/her diet with U.S. dietary codes; (3) know which food selections were high in calories, fat, and cholesterol, and low in complex carbohydrates and fiber; and (4) understand weight management. An intensive weekend workshop for teachers focusing on foundations of health education, drug education, emotional health, and human sexuality demonstrated that a well-planned and implemented in-service training program can effectively improve teachers' competency in health education. (JD)

The relationship of knowledge, attitudes, and prevalence of steroid use among college athletes and nonathletes was investigated. Results indicated that the more individuals knew about steroids, the more favorable was their attitude toward use. Powerlifters and bodybuilders were found most likely to use steroids. (JD)

Elementary school physical education teachers were almost unanimous in their beliefs that normal weight is very important to the health of children, and accurately perceived the etiology of childhood obesity. Most did not believe schools do enough to alleviate obesity and supported school-based weight reduction techniques. (JD)

Emphasizing cardiovascular fitness may be a barrier to mobilizing the sedentary individual. Instead, encouraging low-level physical activity may be an effective first step. A study of Illinois public schools (N=342) found that a minimal amount of time was devoted to formal sex education. Formal sex education instruction was given as part of a health education class or unit, was not comprehensive, and followed no consistent pattern. (JD)

According to a national survey of health education program administrators (N=280), projected retirements in the health education professoriate will be distributed fairly evenly over the next two decades. The number of new doctorates produced annually appears to be adequate to fill positions opened through retirements. (JD)
