Discusses students' writing in mathematics, focusing on (1) creating stories; (2) writing mathematical essays; (3) expressing feelings and beliefs about mathematics through diaries and anecdotes; and (4) the use of dialogs. Suggests that student errors in mathematics be used as motivational devices and starting points for mathematical explorations, involving problem solving and problem posing activities. Given the recent reconceptualizations about the nature and the role of writing within the mathematics curriculum, the proposal to instigate similar reconceptualizations, regarding the nature and the role of reading mathematics within curricular designs, is discussed with respect to appropriate strategies and relevant contexts.
