Sensory Processing: Meeting Individual Needs Using the Seven Senses

Most caregivers and teachers of young children are familiar with the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste. Many may not be aware that there are two additional senses: the proprioceptive and vestibular senses. Proprioceptive sensors are located in the joints and tendons and enable a person to know the location of each part of the body. The vestibular sensors are located in the inner ear, and facilitate awareness of the body's position in relation to its surroundings. When caregivers and teachers are knowledgeable about these additional senses and the sensory integration process, they can assist young children to interact more successfully with their environment. Knowledge of sensory processing is important for teachers who work with children with disabilities. In this article, foundational information for recognizing, interpreting, and understanding the implications of an individual child's sensory needs based on observable behavior is presented. This is accomplished by first providing some basic information on how the sensory systems function and how they impact child behavior. These implications are then examined more closely by describing four patterns of sensory processing styles. The article concludes with a discussion of the importance of individualization for children, regardless of the predominant sensory pattern noted. (Contains 3 tables.)
