This article offers a brief definition of self-concept and explores the difficulties of finding an instrument to measure the self-concept of young people who have complex needs. The article focuses on the use of the Piers-Harris 2 instrument, exploring its strengths and weaknesses for this client group.

A study evaluated a person-centered counseling intervention on the self-concept of four children (ages 6-12) with moderate mental retardation. The study used person-centered art therapy as an adjunct to counseling. Three of the children indicated an improved self-concept.
