The relationships among measures of quantitative thinking in first through fifth grade children assigned either to an experimental math program emphasizing tactile, manipulative, or individual activity in learning metric and decimal concepts, or to a control group, were examined. Tables are presented and conclusions discussed. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedCarlson, Jerry S.; Wiedl, Karl Heinz – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
Measures of concrete operational thought and the Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices were factor analyzed for a sample of primary students. Results indicated that primarily perceptual abilities are required for solution of the Piagetian tests, although abstract reasoning is involved in the solution of matrices and in conservation of substance…

Conservation of liquid was measured on a zero-to-six scale and correlated with scores on a standardized reading test for a sample of seven year old children. Observed correlations were not significant and tend to confirm most previous research in the area. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedLarkins, A. Guy; Swint, John W., Jr. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
A true-false test was administered to a sample of first grade pupils in order to investigate tendency toward acquiescence or dissent in responding to such items. Results indicate that there is a tendency toward acquiescence in some pupils and towards dissent in others. Implications are discussed. (JKS)

Peer reviewedEstes, Gary D.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
The relation between performance on the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts (BTBC) and achievement in first grade was examined. The correlation between the BTBC and the Stanford Achievement Test was significant. The findings support Boehm's assertation that mastery of the concepts is related to achievement in the primary grades. (Author/JKS)

The Kahn Intelligence Test, Experimental Form and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children were administered to three groups of Spanish surname children of varying language dominance to determine if the Kahn test is freer of cultural bias. Results suggest that the tests are not different in their cultural bias. (Author/JKS)

The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices were given to two samples of preschool children to investigate differences between problem children and nonproblem children as well as sex differences. Some comparisons were significant. Tables are presented and results are discussed. (JKS)
Descriptors: Perception, Preschool Children, Problem Children, Sex Differences
Peer reviewedKrasner, Paul R.; Silverstein, Leonard – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
Twenty-seven multiply handicapped cerebral palsied preschool children were administered the Preschool Attainment Record, The Vineland Maturity Scale, and the Gesell Developmental Schedules in order to assess concurrent validity on the first measure. Significant correlations were obtained among the three measures. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedSchneider, Robert J.; Rothberg, Joseph M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
Methodological issues raised in a feasibility study to develop a psychological test to predict illicit drug use are described. A small set of items was found to be related to prior drug use. These items maintained their ability to discriminate users and non-users in a cross-validation study. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedBooth, Richard F.; Norton, Richard S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
Usefulness of the Comrey Validity Check scale score as an index of random or indiscriminate responding to the Comrey Personality Scales was evaluated on a large sample of Navy paramedical personnel. Tables are presented and implications are discussed. (Author/JKS)

The Achievement Motivation Scale, a brief, non-theoretical self-report measure, was administered to ten classes of undergraduates at two universities. Results supported other findings suggesting that the scale is useful in predicting college grades even when combined with high school grade point average and a scholastic aptitude test. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedThurber, Steven – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
The moderating effect of sex-role attitudes in relation to the predictive validity of Mehrabian's achievement tendency scale for females is examined. The scale predicts better for academic achievement with females classified as non-traditional in sex-role orientation, and in social achievement for females classified as traditional. (Author/JKS)
